A unique marketing tip: why is it worth corresponding with your client in their mother tongue?

In our globalised market, it comes as no surprise when two companies from different countries enter into a business deal or a long-term collaboration. Numerous international corporations and companies invest or enter into foreign markets offering their products or services. Social media facilitate international transactions by allowing businesses to develop networks of contacts, to interact with them and maintain business relationships. In this business model, correspondence plays a crucial part and needs to be conducted in the most effective and business-friendly way.

Quality for Translators (5 useful tips)

I am delighted to host another guest post on my blog, this time by Karen Sexton. In her post, Karen discusses the importance of quality in translation and gives 5 tips on how to maintain it.
About the author:
Karen Sexton is the owner and quality manager of  EAP English and Portuguese. She also works as a proofreader and editor for several other translation agencies, and she’s specialized in managing translation resources. If your language requirements involve the Portuguese <> English pair, Transliteria is happy to recommend Karen from EAP.

Now, for the post:

There are countless posts and forum discussions online about the issue of quality in the translation business. Nonetheless, because of the distinctive characteristics of this business, that is, the fact that it is largely dominated by freelancers who operate alone or in small groups globally, there aren't many official industry standards known by translators, customers and translation agencies.

Tłumaczenie dokumentów i pism urzędowych.

How to Translate an Idiom?

Idioms are very intricate expressions, which makes them especially difficult to translate into another language. The reason behind this difficulty is that first of all, idioms are culture-bound, i.e. specific to particular culture and society, secondly, their meaning is rather metaphorical than literal, and hence they should not be translated word for word.

Invest in Poland

Poland is the sixth most attractive country in the world to invest in. It has climbed up from last year's 12th position. Among the Polish cities, Cracow is considered a perfect place for business.
Poland has made a great improvement in order to become an investor-friendly country, and as a result, it scores much higher in the rankings. The latest World Investment Report 2011 by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) placed Poland as the sixth most attractive country in the world to invest in 2011-2013. This is a significant promotion, given the 12th position in 2010. According to the Report, investors would benefit much more when investing in Poland than in Germany (9th position), United Kingdom (13th position) and even in Singapore (14th).

Anglicisms: Why Biedronka is a ‘Trusted Brand’ and not ‘Zaufana Marka’.

On my recent trip to Poland I witnessed a not-so-very-surprising linguistic phenomenon of the Polish language being under a strong influence of the English language. It’s nothing new – as far as I remember, English words have always been entering the Polish language, be it technical terms – mostly connected with computing - or slang phrases used by teenagers. What struck me, however, was the scale of the occurrence, and the areas where English words wormed their way into the Polish language. It seems that just as the Eastern-European migrants ‘invaded’ United Kingdom, English terms have done exactly the same with the Polish language.

Quality or low price?

Every business, whatever the size or industry, is aware of the importance of marketing and creating the perfect image of their company. It is particularly important when you target an audience of non-English speakers. In order to get it right, some businesses are ready to invest a large chunk of their budget for translation but there are companies that assume this could be done at a low cost.

Ability or network?

This excellent post was written by my Twitter-friend Konstantina Drakou (@wordyrama). I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did!

Does success arrive from your ability or from your network?  Let’s take me for example, Konstantina Drakou  (@wordyrama), a financially struggling 32-year translator (who after ten years in the UK returns home to Crete). After working mostly for clients within the Greek market for four years I face first-hand the effects of the country’s financial dire state, hold a part-time job in IT to keep up with the terminology in the field and to, well basically, survive.

POLISH TRANSLATOR AND BUSINESS CONSULTANT HELPS BUSINESSES EXPAND INTO THE POLISH MARKET

A warm welcome to my colleague, Aga Gordon (@acgtranslation), who is my first guest on this blog. Her post will also appear as a press release in a Kent business magazine.

Poland has become one of the largest and fastest growing emerging markets in Eastern and Central Europe since joining the EU in 2004.  Furthermore, the large Polish community is now an extremely important part of the UK demographic makeup.  It offers endless opportunities for SMEs willing to increase their ROI through expanding their client database. Thanks to globalisation and the ease of communication afforded by the Internet, such an opportunity lies within reach. However, expanding into such a promising market should be planned with care to ensure success.

Bournemouth Airport wprowadza nowe opłaty za parking.

Bournemouth Airport wprowadza zmiany w systemie opłat parkingowych.

A Short Survey

Dear Translators! In the name of a very important research, we need you opinion. Together with Silvina (@ATGtranslations), we are going to conduct a thorough research and then write an article about client testimonials.
Why? This was actually triggered by one of many great discussions with our Twitter friends. It turned out that every one of us had a different view on the issue of obtaining and using testimonials. This is why myself and Silvina decided to ask you about your opinion on this very interesting matter; tell us whether you consider it important / giving your business credibility or whether you feel that this is simply bragging.
Please share your views with us and take this very short survey here. Once we have received sufficient number of opinions and done the research, we will share the results with you in our article. So take the survey and stay tuned!

The Language of Advertising

As I have recently been exploring the language of marketing and advertising, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my findings with you.
The language of advertising is a language of its own; very often it does not follow the grammar or even logical rules of the everyday language as we know it but this is what the advertisers actually strive for – the more a slogan diverts from the norm the more catchy it is, although at times it might be captivating in a negative way.

Afrykańsko-karaibsko-polska impreza

Poprzednia impreza „Get Together” miała miejsce 19 lutego i spotkała się z ogromnym zainteresowaniem. Dlatego zachęceni ostatnim sukcesem, Dorset African Caribbean Association postanowiło zorganizować kolejną imprezę, tym razem będzie to Quiz Night – czyli kulturowe wyzwanie dla trzyosobowych drużyn, które będą odpowiadały na pytania dotyczące kultury krajów afrykańskich, Karaibów oraz Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej. Polski Kurier postanowił wziąć udział w zabawie i również wystawi swoją drużynę. Rywalizacja zapewne będzie ostra, gdyż dla zwycięskiej drużyny przewidziano atrakcyjne nagrody.

My first press release

For the last half a year or so, I’ve been an avid reader of the local business magazines. This was another step in my ‘going local” campaign and it turned out to be beneficial in many ways. Firstly, it is a pleasure to read (short and dynamic articles), secondly, it is extremely inspirational to see other businesses prospering in such difficult times, and finally, it motivates and encourages me to work even harder when I see that others are doing the same and they succeed.

Renciści wracają do pracy - nowy program rządowy.

Minister pracy i zabezpieczenia społecznego (Minister of Work and Pensions) Chris Grayling tłumaczy: „Chciałbym zapewnić wszystkich, którzy martwią się nowym programem, iż zostanie wprowadzony wyłącznie z myślą o pomocy tym, którzy mogą wrócić do pracy.

How to perform well as an Interpreter

Interpreting can be a very stressful job. It comes with a huge responsibility as the gravity of communication lies on the interpreter’s shoulders.

Very often at stake is someone’s health, job, freedom or housing and financial situation. Therefore, being aware of the significance of my role as an interpreter, I am always 100% focused on communicating exactly the same ideas that have been uttered by the speakers. Concentration during the interpreting itself is one thing but equally important is the preparation process – no matter how focused you are, you can always forget one or two crucial words. This may lead then to either mistranslating them or finding yourself in an embarrassing situation of describing the thing that is meant. Mind you, there is no time to flip through the pages of your dictionary and forget about googling anything!

6 Ways to Get More Clients

Clients DO need you

You must have heard dozens of stories praising working with direct clients, you might as well have read some articles and blog posts instructing you firstly how to find a client (meaning: how to make them find you), and then, when you get hold of one, how to pamper and keep them until death do you part.
You still might not be convinced whether this is a good idea to work directly with a client, thinking that doing business is not your strong point and that you probably will not handle the pressure of actually closing the deal. Well, if that’s the case then perhaps this little story of mine will encourage you to change your mind.

A black spot on the translation profession

Translators go to great lengths to be treated seriously as skilled, well-educated and knowledgeable professionals. Regardless whether we work for an agency or direct clients, we take a lot of care to deliver excellent translation, possibly the best one we have ever done, after all, there has to be some progress, right? Moreover, in order to contribute to the good reputation of our profession, we will do whatever is in our power to create a perfect online profile, we will interact with other translators, share experiences and tweet like crazy picking up the best links to feed other brains. We are also ready to time and time again educate those sceptical clients that we are not just transcribing one word after another but that in fact we do valuable work, pay attention to detail, we have a quality control process in place and so on.

Thank you

Despite being a newbie to the networking events, I was warmly welcomed by the entrepreneurs gathered at the Beales Breakfast Club, where the ubiquitous aroma of coffee accompanied lively conversations and cheerful smiles of the participants. It was definitely worth getting up at the crack of dawn to meet so many nice people and to be introduced to those valuable contacts. The interest I received has truly exceeded my expectations. I hope that by breaking the language barrier between the Polish community and English businesses we will together develop a fruitful and continuous relationship. I will be more than happy to introduce your businesses to the Polish community and act as a liaison ensuring smooth and efficient communication between you and your new clients.
This is where I would like to say thank you to those of you who expressed their interest in targeting a new group of Polish clients as well as those who inspired me by a stimulating and witty conversation. I truly hope to see you at another networking event soon!

Neologisms in Business - an Indication of our Incessantly Developing Economy (PART 2)

Studying neologisms from the cultural perspective brings better understanding of our world. The appearance of new words enables us to observe how the business world evolves, what direction it goes and what its target is. It is unquestionable that economy will transform through innovation and technological development, and hence the language - be it jargon or formal language - will change accordingly. Refusal to accept neologisms equals dissent from acquiescence to the improvement of the whole business sector, including computing, science and technology.

Neologisms in Business - an Indication of our Incessantly Developing Economy (PART 1)

The need for new terms should not be underestimated. New words continuously enter lexicon to describe new concepts. Conversely, obsolete words fall out of use as they lose their significance.
There is an intricate relationship between language and economy. Both phenomena undergo incessant changes over time and while language acts as a marker of business development, reflecting back the industry as it changes, vocabulary appears as a primary indicator of this transformation. Arguably, the language itself accounts for the great progress of scientific, technological and social change as a result of the instantaneous transmission together with the rapid translation of the words. The demand for innovation in the fields of
techniques, products, skills and trends requires the creation of new words to denote latest occurrences in the world of business.

Little subtlety – big difference.

Language is full of ‘innocent’ subtleties, which may or may not have a significant impact on the meaning. While the difference could be rather obscure in everyday language, in the language of law, however, this may become a crucial matter.
As a translator, I simply crave for finding and resolving these tiny distinctions between one word and the other. It is my everyday bread to discover what impact on the reader this phrase would have and would it make any difference if I used that one...? Yes, these questions are endless.

Kilka dni temu rozpoczeliśmy nowy rok kalendarzowy.
